Skills Sessions
Overview
Hour-long lessons split into three manageable 20-minute chunks, giving you real flexibility to teach them back-to-back in one lesson or spread across a half term; each segment is a careers-related activity with clear objectives, quick wins for oracy and teamwork, and minimal prep. Schools use these to build a consistent skills strand across the year, and they pair brilliantly with Job Spotlights and Guess My Job for a rich, hands-on careers experience.
How To Use This Resource
Each skills session comes with a lesson plan and a PowerPoint that includes narrated videos guiding the adult in the room through the lesson (perfect to leave for supply teachers). Whilst most teachers will teach all three sessions back-to-back or across the three terms, some create a “careers afternoon” by adding a Job Spotlight as the hook and a Guess My Job as the closer. Keep timings tight, use mini whiteboards for fast feedback, and finish with a one-line reflection so pupils can name the skill they used and where they’ll use it next. This format also works neatly as an after-school careers club.
